Planetary Boundaries – the iconic framework

Visualization of the nine environmental processes that regulate life on our planet. Azote was tasked with helping Johan Rockström and his research team visualize research on the nine planetary boundaries we need to stay within in order to preserve a stable and resilient planet. The work with the illustrations has been closely linked with the conceptual development and took place in close dialogue with the researchers.

If we exceed these limits, the risk of large-scale, sudden or irreversible environmental changes will increase. The planetary boundaries framework has generated enormous interest in science, policy and practice, and the visualization has become iconic. Our collaboration with the research group is still ongoing. The most recent update to the framework was presented in 2023 when scientists for the first time quantified all nine processes that regulate the Earth's stability and resilience.
